Reykjavík, þingvellir, Waterfalls

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and also the most northern capital city in the world. The city has almost 120,000 inhabitants and is therefore Iceland's largest city that has a lot to offer: museums, hot springs, a botanical garden and many cultural events and special exhibitions as well as an interesting night life in various bars on weekends.

If you are weary of the city you can take a car or book one of many advertised tours to get out of the city and into the countryside: þingvellir is not far away and many natural wonders along the Golden Circle are reached within a couple of hours.

Þingvellir is indeed something special: It is located in its own national park directly at the þingvallavatn. It is a site of historical importance because of the fact that the first Islandic parliament was established there in 930. Additionally, you can see what it means to stand on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: rifts and fissure vents allow you to see the geological activities in Iceland.

You can also see one of Iceland's most exceptional waterfalls, Hraunfossar, near Húsafell in the north of Iceland!
