Himeji

Himeji-jo is a huge castle complex which purpose it was to protect the Imperial capital of Kyoto in past centuries and to provide military forces in case of Kyoto being under siege. The castle has been extended over the centuries and has not been damaged during WWII. It can also be seen in many movies, i.e in Last Samurai or the James Bond movie You only live twive.
Another name for the castle is White Heron Castle because of its bright white exterior. You should definitely go there and see it with your own eyes. That also applies to the Kōko-en garden which comprises many gardens of different types into one large area!
