Kyoto

Kyoto is the old Imperial city in the centre of Japan. It is somehow the opposite of what Tokyo is. However, the life in both cities is less hectic and rather quiet but Kyoto is much quieter. In terms of culture and traditions has Kyoto more to offer than Tokyo.
Nara is not far away and even Kansai is at your doorstep. The old Imperial Palace is located in the city and numerous old paths lead to temples and shrines.
There are also many narrow streets in the older parts of the city with restaurants and small shops that are worth a visit while you are there.
